| BPA Battlegrounds
February 22, 2010
In furtherance of our February article about the ongoing battles regarding testing of Bisphenol-A (BPA), we write to inform you that the California Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has instituted proceedings to determine if BPA should be listed under Proposition 65 as a chemical known to cause reproductive toxicity. OEHHA bases its findings on those of the National Toxicology Program's Center for the Evaluation of Risks to Human Reproduction. The report concludes that there is clear evidence of adverse developmental effects in laboratory animals at "high" levels of exposure. Developmental effects include fetal death and reduced litter size in rats and mice exposed prenatally.
OEHHA is now requesting public comment concerning whether BPA meets the criteria set forth in Proposition 65. The comment period lasts until April 13, 2010. In the interim, we anticipate to see increased reports, both for and against BPA, as the battle lines are drawn.
